Photographing cosplayers at Comic Con and other conventions leans two different ways: capturing people on the floor and then trying to create images that stand out from all the rest. Most photographers that take pride in their portraits often try to do something that looks good off the main floor where everyone else is. The great thing about comic con is that pretty much everyone is alright with you taking their picture. It's even better when you ask someone--let alone less creepy!... READ MORE

I was thinking about you guys while I was cleaning the bathrooms a few weeks ago.(This’ll make sense in a minute.)For reasons passing my understanding, the builder of my house decided to include 4 bathrooms.  The house is not that big.  I have no idea who would think it needed four toilets, but I’ll save my thoughts about excess for another time.Anyway, I tend to clean all four bathrooms at once.  It takes long enough to get my hair up, gloves on, cleaning stuff out,... This is why studio lighting can be intensely difficult for some and fun for others. How you light a portrait can make or break the image, so it’s important not only to do it, but to do it well. I wanted to focus on a couple of creative lighting styles used not only in portraits, but in fashion, beauty... READ MORE

The filmmakers behind ShoHawk have put together a simple infographic for filmmakers that, with all due respect of course, we think applies even better to photographers. The graphic describes 15 principles of Mise en Scéne, and it helps explain how different visual elements and styles in an scene (or photo) help tell different kinds of stories.Mise en Scène, literally translated “placing on stage” in English, refers to everything in front of the camera and how it is arranged—for a filmmaker, this can include composition, sets,... I have yet to meet someone who loves getting their picture taken with the whole extended family. The thought of getting all the dramatic aunts, crazy uncles, wild kids, and tired grandparents together and smiling all at the same time seems nearly impossible, and not at all fun. I know of many photographers who refuse to do big family portraits because they can be so unpleasant. I have grown to love big extended family portrait sessions throughout the years. You can too, whether you’re the... READ MORE

Tethered shooting is a photography technique that has been practiced by many professional photographers for years. In short, tethering allows you to connect your camera to a computer or tablet and almost instantly view your digital images on the device within seconds after it is captured. Due to expense and accessibility, tethered-shooting was generally reserved for photographers who do a lot of studio work and high-end commercial photo shoots. However, as tethering technology became significantly cheaper and easier to use, tethered shooting as been practiced by... READ MORE

I love taking street portraits. Whether the people you are photographing are posing or just going about their day-to-day life, humans are the most captivating, strange and interesting of subjects. Most of my portraits taken out on the street are shot with the permission of the subject. That’s my style. I love looking for people who intrigue me. I often signal them with a smile and gesture of my camera, then watch for their reaction. But I also shoot unposed portraits and life on the street, whatever catches... READ MORE

Unless you’ve been in the bowels of some cellar à la Saddam Hussein circa 2003, you’ll be aware that a faded or ‘matte’ look has been a prevalent look in photography for years now. Perhaps often associated with ‘hipster’ the matte look has useful application particularly when trying to give an image a vintage look and feel, as is often the target in film emulation. Those who find shooting fish in a barrel good sport will predictably chime in here, but the fact remains it’s... READ MORE
