Ultra-wide-angle lenses tend to suffer from the most distortion, but Sony says its newest wide-angle G Master prime has very little. Announced on April 20, the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 G Master is a compact E-Mount lens that’s designed to fight distortion and flare.

The Sony 14mm f/1.8 G is constructed with two extreme aspherical elements that the company says helps maintain resolution through the full image. That’s paired with two extra-low dispersion elements to fight flare and ghosting and Sony’s Nano AR Coating II, which combats another type of flare from light hitting the lens at extreme angles.

Those optics create a curved front that’s not compatible with filters, however. Sony compensated some by adding a rear filter holder that works with sheet filters for ND, color correction and soft effects.

Sony managed to fit those features into a body that weighs 16.3 ounces and measures just four inches long. Like other G Master lenses, the lens is weather-sealed against dust and moisture. The barrel of the lens also houses a focus hold button along with the expected focus ring and focus control switch.

For autofocus, Sony used two motors. Called an XD Linear Motor system, the double motors, Sony says, allows for faster autofocus. The design can also help minimize noise and vibration, the company claims.

As a bright f/1.8 ultra-wide angle, Sony is toting this lens for photography genres like astrophotography. The lens is also capable of focusing as close as 9.8 inches, which opens up some possibility for bokeh even from a wide angle. A nine-blade aperture should help keep bokeh balls circular.

While Sony makes big claims with the new lens, the company’s G Master lenses that I’ve used in the past tend to be pretty sharp, durable and quick to focus. If Sony’s claims hold true, the lens could be a favorite among E-Mount shooters for landscapes and any shoots that incorporate an expansive view.

Those features come at a cost: the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 G Master lens lists for about $1,600. It is expected to begin shipping in May.
