Photo Book Showcases the 8 Remaining Bear Species on Earth
Remembering Wildlife has started work on a new book that will feature photos of the eight remaining species of bears found in the wild. All profits from its sale will go towards protecting them.
Remembering Wildlife organization has launched several charity photo books that highlight endangered species and act to raise funds for the protection of the animals featured with the help of famous supporters and talented photographers around the world.
The previous book, “Remembering African Wild Dogs,” was launched on November 6, 2021. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the endangered African wild dogs as only 6,600 of them are left due to the loss of habitat, conflict with humans and other predators, and other factors.
Highlighting the Eight Remaining Species of Bears
Today, the organization has unveiled its latest Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise money to produce the seventh book in the collection, “Remembering Bears.” If the project reaches its funding goal, the photo book will be published in October 2022 and all profits will go to projects that work to ensure the future of bears in the wild.
There are eight remaining species of bears on Earth: American black bears, Andean bears, Asiatic black bears, brown bears, giant pandas, polar bears, sloth bears, and sun bears, all of which are featured in the book. The International Union for Conservation and Nature lists six of the bears as vulnerable or endangered due to climate change, human-wildlife conflict, and other pressures.
Like in the previous books, images are donated by many contributing wildlife photographers, including Marsel van Oosten, Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting, Greg du Toit, and Daisy Gilardini. This year’s cover photo was taken by Morten Jørgensen, who has also written a book about polar bear conservation.
“For over two years, the impact of COVID-19 has affected the whole world, and conservation projects have been particularly hard hit, both because many rely on tourist dollars to do their valuable work and the fact that donations from people or companies around the world have slowed down,” says founder Margot Raggett.
“This is why organizations such as Remembering Wildlife need to step up and plug the gaps.”
The Kickstarter campaign must raise a minimum of £20,000 ($26,281) to ensure the book will be published. The crowdfunding campaign will run until May 1, 2022.
